Four Ways to Brighten up a Rainy Day

Technically, New Zealand is a rainforest. Each year the North Island sees between 1,000 and 2,000mm of rain. This is especially tough when you’ve got sunshine plans in the area. You might be wondering what to do when it is always so wet? Rather than taking a day off from adventure here are four things you can do to bring some sun to a grey day.

Beachside Cafe

Had to raincheck your plans? Why not go and check out a cafe on the waterfront instead? The rain, wind and generally poor weather make for some epic scenery. The ocean comes to life, the trees start to dance and there is nobody outside to spoil the view. Being in a cafe is doubly nice because while the weather may be chilly you’ll be warm in a cafe enjoying a nice hot drink.

Head to a Lookout

“People fall in love during storms all the time, probably.” – Michael Solana

There is something special about a stormy day. The rain has an isolating effect that can make the world wash away. A rainy day is an excuse to be close, it is an excuse for an adventure. Heading to a lookout with some mates or a special somebody can be a surreal experience. Wherever you are, the view is all yours. Enjoy it.

The ‘Touristy Stuff’

The funny thing about living in a city is that you tune out of the ‘touristy stuff’. It is easy to get caught up in all the little things you can do rather than the big things you should do. That is especially the case in Auckland – there is always heaps to do. A rainy day could be the motivation you need to actually see some of the best things the city has to offer! Rather than lay out in the domain go and see the museum. Mission Bay looking like a scene from Mission Impossible? Stop in at Kelly Tarlton’s Underground Aquarium.

Do it Anyway

“Do what you can’t” – Casey Neistat

You’re gonna get told you can’t go somewhere in the rain. You may even feel like the weather means you can’t enjoy your trip! Be like Casey Neistat and do what you can’t. Go and take beach photos in a storm, go exploring, get a little muddy. Sometimes you can find wonder in the most unexpected places or breaks in between the showers.
